Principal Software Engineering Manager

Join our fast-growing, collaborative team as a Principal Software Engineering Manager, where you’ll lead the development team building core video experiences in Bing, Microsoft Start, Skype and in other consumer apps across Microsoft. This leadership role is essential in our efforts to build rich, engaging and delightful video experiences at scale. We’re looking for a leader who has a proven history of balancing value, quality, performance, and intelligence across a portfolio of features and products. As the Principal Software Engineering Manager, you’ll lead the team, and set the tone and standard for video experience culture at Microsoft.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
  •  OR equivalent experience.
  • 6+ years of experience as a team leader or manager of a cross-functional engineering team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience developing features and experiences for customer-facing applications across both mobile and desktop.
  • Experience developing SDKs, or reusable platforms or frameworks
  • Experience with agile development with priority driven software delivery.
  • Working knowledge of REST APIs.
  • Demonstrated ability to debug and troubleshoot JavaScript and UI/CSS issues and knowledge of optimizations for high performance user experiences.
  • Experience building accessible applications that follow WCAG and ADA specifications. 
  • Experience building rich multimedia experiences on web. 
  • Working knowledge of media formats, codecs, and transcoding. 
  • Experience analyzing and improving service efficiency and reliability. 
  • Proficiency in Secure Software Development Life Cycle. 
  • Proficient in communication skills and ability to collaborate within a multi-disciplinary team. 
  • Familiarity with industry trends in video technologies, OpenGL, Shaders, video processing. 

 

Software Engineering M6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $158,500 - $276,600 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $202,800 - $304,200 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Lead for quality and velocity: Drive the engineering vision for Video Experience across Bing, Microsoft Start, and other consumer Microsoft products. Handle complex architectures, partnerships and align with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality video capabilities with high velocity execution. Work with the product development team in driving innovative approaches to solving complex problems. Partner with the product development team in driving innovative approaches to solving complex problems. 
  • Large-Scale Team Management: Lead a distributed team across geographies. Motivate, attract, retain, and grow talent. Foster a culture of engineering craftsmanship and polish in all aspects of video experiences. Lead the delivery of video experiences that are highly crafted and rewarding for users. 
  • Driving for scale: Anticipate architecture needs across multiple products. Understand design patterns and modern technologies (e.g., React, TypeScript, Swift). Resolve dependencies affecting a wide organization. Lead the delivery of video experiences that are highly crafted and rewarding for users. Create and implement Software Development Kit (SDK) design patterns, drive for stability, configuration, and scalability  
  • Business Impact: Influence product direction by collaborating with cross-product teams and external partners. Make informed decisions on when to say no and demonstrate conviction.
