Director, Cloud Engineering

The Director, Cloud Engineering leads AbsenceSoft’s Infrastructure Engineering, DevOps, and Cloud Operations functions. This role is accountable for the availability, reliability, and security of the company’s platform. It drives the adoption of infrastructure as code, operational excellence, and cost optimization while ensuring platform scalability that aligns with business needs. The Director provides both strategic and hands-on leadership, building and managing high-performing technical teams and partnering with cross-functional stakeholders to deliver safe, rapid, and reliable software delivery.

What You’ll Do

Lead, mentor, and grow teams of infrastructure engineers and DevOps engineers.
Define multi-quarter infrastructure and cloud engineering roadmaps aligned with company objectives.
Establish engineering and operational standards for infrastructure, DevOps, and cloud operations.
Oversee the achievement of platform availability SLAs through proactive monitoring and incident management.
Serve as incident commander during major outages and lead blameless post-mortems.
Direct infrastructure as code adoption, ensuring 100% Terraform implementation across AWS accounts.
Manage CI/CD pipeline architecture and operations, including Jenkins, ECS, and related tooling.
Oversee AWS cost management and optimization practices through forecasting, right-sizing, and FinOps strategies.
Partner with Engineering, Product, and Security leadership to align infrastructure investments with company strategy.
Maintain compliance with SOC2 and other regulatory frameworks through secure operations and audit readiness.
Build self-service infrastructure capabilities for development teams while maintaining compliance guardrails.
Act as a player-coach, contributing to complex technical problem solving while ensuring technical credibility.
Participate in a highly compliant environment while assisting to maintain company controls and security within your job role.
Assist in maintaining applicable organizational security and compliance controls within your department, role, and subordinate’s roles.

What’ll Set You Up for Success

Required Skills:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent education and experience.
3+ years in director or senior manager-level leadership roles overseeing technical teams.
8+ years of engineering experience in cloud infrastructure, DevOps, or infrastructure engineering.
3+ years managing production infrastructure in high-availability SaaS environments.
Deep expertise with AWS, Terraform, and CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins required).
Proven experience with incident management, on-call operations, and platform reliability at scale.

Preferred Skills:

AWS professional certifications (Solutions Architect, DevOps Engineer, or Security Specialty).
Background in SaaS organizations within healthcare, HR technology, or other regulated industries.
Experience establishing FinOps practices and cost governance.
Contributions to open-source infrastructure or DevOps communities.
Experience with multi-cloud or Kubernetes migration initiatives.

Ability to communicate complex technical topics clearly to executives and non-technical stakeholders.
Collaborative mindset to drive cross-functional alignment and shared ownership of reliability goals.
Demonstrated ability to lead cultural change toward operational excellence and cost discipline.
Resilience in navigating ambiguity and making prioritization decisions with incomplete information.
Hands-on technical expertise with modern infrastructure, cloud, and DevOps practices.
Knowledge of and ability to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and concepts to improve infrastructure, operations, and team efficiency.

The salary range for this position is: $172K - $215K.
